Crafting the Perfect Interview

How we help contributors to be their best on screen.

Interviews are essential for bringing a narrative to life – and a good interview can form the basis of a film, transforming a story from an idea into an approachable and authentic watch. A good interviewer gets the best out of any contributor, whether they are experienced or absolute first timers. Here at Urbancroft Films, we are skilled in making our contributors feel prepared, relaxed, and good about their interview afterwards. Here’s how we craft the perfect interview…

The Setup

No matter where an interview takes place, we come prepared. Our team can bring all the kit to you – building the perfect set up in your space – or we can source a location, which could be at our home in Film City Glasgow. From lighting to cameras, you’ll never have to worry about the technical side of production.

Above is an interview we conducted with Managing Director of AOC Archaeology, Andy Heald. Take a look at what goes on behind the scenes to create a great look on screen.

We’re also able to build anonymous interview setups that still tell a great visual story. By utilising shadows, close ups, reflections, or even shooting through objects, we have a plethora of great techniques ready to apply on set.

Being on Screen

We always make sure to create a comfortable atmosphere and draw out authentic stories. An interview should feel like a natural conversation: one that creates a narrative that can be used to build a film. We have over 18 years of experience in this and have worked with all different types of people. Even if you don’t think you’ll feel confident on camera, we’re ready to help!

Using the Content

It’s important to think about the context an interview is used in. From induction videos and event recaps to client testimonials and employee journeys, these stories are used for just about anything. Take a look at some examples from past projects:

An Epidemic in Women’s Football

In a mini medical documentary filmed for The Mackay Clinic, our team investigated how different ACL surgical approaches can influence confidence, rehabilitation, and return to football. We conducted interviews with football players and surgeon Gordon Mackay – both outdoors and in the operating theatre.

Alan Smith interview at the Scottish Construction Summit.

Scottish Construction Summit 2026

For the inaugural Scottish Construction Summit, we captured vox pop interviews in the action of the event. For these, we had to think about sound control, portable equipment, and finding the right background in a crowd of people.

Building the St Ayles Skiff Tribute

In a short film documenting the building of the St Ayles Skiff tribute, traditional boat builder Gail tells us about the project. Her interview helped build the backbone of the film, and we supported it with additional footage we’d captured through the process, such as a timelapse of the construction of the boat.
